Pharmacy Services
Community pharmacies are evolving from dispensaries to health care hubs offering Medication Therapy Management services. To steward this change, CACDS has led in development of the financial sustainability pillar of the Blueprint for Pharmacy - The Framework to Define and Fund Pharmacy Services.
Developed by CACDS in 2009, the Framework is part of the Association’s contribution to the Blueprint for Pharmacy, a national strategic plan led by the Canadian Pharmacists Association. The Framework’s purpose is to help evolve pharmacy funding from a transactional approach, based on dispensing, to a patient-focused approach, based on pharmacist services. CACDS developed a new business model that meets three main criteria:
- It is adaptable to the regulatory, policy and practice environments of each province and territory
- It includes transitional strategies for funding, infrastructure (such as technology and technician regulation) and change management
- It promotes and supports the development of expanded and enhanced pharmacy services that are accessible to all Canadians, regardless of location
